History
Chronology of leading events of Salesian School (1951-2016)
 
In 1941 Salesian Orphanage was founded and affiliated to Salesian House of Studies. After World War II, the number of students increased tremendously as there were dayboys as well as boarders. In 1949, Rev. Fr. V. Ricaldone took office as Rector of the school and Rev. Fr. A. Perkumas was the Perfect of Studies. Students then rose to the figure of around 500.
1951 —
Salesian School became independent at 16 Chai Wan Road. The Secondary Section was added to the School. There were two Classes of Form 1.
1953
Rev. Fr. A. Perkumas completed his tenure of office and went to Venezuela. Rev. Fr. E. Tiberi succeeded him as the School Rector and Principal of the school. Students increased to over 1000.
1955
Rector Major Very Rev. Fr. R. Ziggiotti toured the Far East and called on our school.
1956
School provided Form 4 and Form 5 places for junior students.
1959
Our first Form 5 graduates took part in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination and gained distinguished results.
Rev. Fr. A. Fedrigotti, Vicar General of the Salesian Society, paid a visit to our school. He celebrated a Holy Mass and addressed the school assembly.
Rev. Fr. G. Py took office as the Prefect of Studies in the Primary Section.
1960
Construction work of the building for our Secondary Section was completed by the end of 1959. His Excellency Sir Robert Black, the Governor of Hong Kong, was invited to officiate at the opening ceremony on 12th January.
Our first graduates of the English Section sat for the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination.
The School Rector, Rev. Fr. Ercole Tiberi, completed his three consecutive terms of office. Fr. Ercole Tiberi inaugurated the expansion of the school to a complete secondary school. He was succeeded by Rev. Fr. Alexander Ma.
1965
The first Joint Athletic Meet for Salesian Schools in Hong Kong and Macau was held on 9th February.
On 4th April, our Rector, Rev. Alexander Ma was chosen to attend the 19th General Chapter of the Salesian Society in Rome.
1968
Rev. Fr. G. Py completed his tenure of office and went to Taiwan. Rev. Fr. F. Li was appointed as the Principal (formerly Prefect of Studies) of the Primary Section.
1969
Rev. Fr. S. Poon succeeded Rev. Fr. Li after the latter completed his tenure of office.
1971
The whole school mourned the death of Rev. Fr. Patrick Corcoran on 5th October. — Rev. Fr. S. Poon took mission in California, U.S.A. Bro. A. Yao became the Principal of Primary Section.
1972
For a better utilization of the school facilities, the dormitory for boarding students was closed.
The Rector, Rev. Fr. John Sen completed his tenure of office. Rev. Fr. Ignatius Lau succeeded in his office. During his office, Rev. Fr. J. Sen adhered strongly to the pedagogic principles of Don Bosco. The principles of providing a well-balanced curriculum and promoting extra-curricular activities were implemented. The school was further promoted by the appointment of Rev. John Wong and Rev. Joseph Lee as Prefects of Studies.
A typhoon on 18th June caused severe damages to the school premises.
The completion of the new wing and the gymnasium provided as ideal school environment for our students.
Students were benefited by the opening of a school canteen on the 1st floor.
1973
This year came the graduation of the first batch of H.K.U. matriculants. Students could then complete their Form 7 education in Salesian School.
1974
Mr. Lau Wai Shing, earning seven distinctions and two credits in the H.K.C.E.E. in 1972, subsequently got four distinctions in the Advanced Level Examination. He was then admitted to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in H.K.U.
The Chinese Section (Secondary) was closed.
Rev. Fr. A. Mak, who had been the Prefect of Studies of Aberdeen Technical School and Yuet Wah College in Macau, took office as the Principal in the Primary Section.
1975
The Secondary Section participated in the Education Department scheme whereby the school would be gradully converted into a fully subsidized school.
The whole school mourned the death of Mr. Kwan Siu Pui, a respected teacher of our school.
Rev. Fr. Ignatius Lau completed his tenure of office. Fr. I. Lau had launched the school on the path of successful transition into a subsidized school. Rev. Fr. John B. Zen succeeded in his office.
To keep in line with the status of a fully subsidized school, the school underwent some administrative changes. The former Rector and Prefect of studies were replaced by a supervisor and a principal respectively. The first office of Supervisor was held by Rev. Fr. John B. Zen and his first office of Principal in the Secondary Section was held by Rev. Fr. Ignatius Lau.
1976
The school authority generously extended help to victims of a fire at Aldrich Bay Village by offering our school gymnasium as the temporary shelter.
1977
Our application for the opening of a Form 6 arts class was turned down and so our Form 5 arts classes had to close down.
Rev. Fr. Joseph Lau was appointed as the Principal of the Secondary Section.
1978
Rev. Fr. John B. Zen had made great effort for the construction of a footbridge across Chai Wan Road, a notorious traffic black spot. Finally a footbridge was constructed in front of our school and was opened for use.
Our alumnus, Rev. Fr. Joseph So, was ordained priest and contributed his efforts to his mother school.
Teacher Mr. Leung Wah Lin, Mr. Lo Hung Fong and Mr. Cheng Yat Ping retired after their long services.
Rev. Fr. John B. Zen completed his tenure of office. While in office, he had applied for one extra F.7 class. In 1979, the proposal was approved. — Rev. Fr. Nobert Tse succeeded in the office.
1980
On Thanksgiving Day, 26th January, a fun fair was held to raise money for refugees in Kampuchea.
Rev. Fr. Nobert Tse completed his tenure of office as the Supervisor. Rev. Fr. Clement Wong succeeded him. Throughout his tenure, Rev. Fr. Nobert Tse was also the Vice-Provincial of the Salesian Society (China Province). While in office, he was particularly concerned about moral education for our students.
Our Principal, Rev. Fr. Joseph Lau, was appointed as the supervisor of Aberdeen Technical School. Rev. Fr. Joseph Ho succeeded him in September.
1981 — — —
'Walk for a Dollar', a fund raising campaign, was organized by S.S.O.B.A. Our school won the prize for the largest number of participants and the prize for the largest fund.
Mr. Siu Pui Tak who had worked in our school since 1959 retired from service on 30th June.
Rev. Fr. A. Mak completed his tenure of office. Rev. Fr. John. Bosco Fung, who had been the Prefect of Studies of Salesian Technical and Industrial School in Taiwan and Yuet Wah College in Macau, was appointed as the Principal of the Primary Section.
1982
S.S.O.B.A. presented an audio system to the school.
1983
Our teacher Mr. Wong Chick Yuen retired.
On 17th December our Chinese debating team came third in a territory-wide debating competition. The team members were also invited by Radio Television Hong Kong to demonstrate debating skills on an E.T.V. programme.
Mr. K. C. Lo, a very experienced teacher of the Primary Section, retired.
1984
On 25th September, the 19th Annual Swimming Gala was held. Rev. Fr. Alexander Ma was invited as our guest of honour. He addressed the assembly and presented prized for the occasion.
17th November was the 25th Speech Day of our school. Rev. Fr. Ercole Tiberi was invited to address the assembly and present certificates and prizes for our students.
1985
The grand celebration of the Secondary Section's Silver Jubilee was held on 12th January. A banquet was held that evening in a Wanchai restaurant to celebrate the event.
The School Open Day was held on 13th December.
Our 31st Annual Athletic Meet was held in Wanchai Sports Ground on 22nd January. Mr. Cavenagh, Chief inspector of Wong Tai sin District Royal H.K. Police Force, was invited to address the assembly and present prizes. He was a past pupil of a Salesian school in England.
1986 — — —
The grand celebration of the Feast Day of Don Bosco was held on 31st January. Rev. Fr. John B. Tsang, Vicar-General, was invited to preside at a Holy Mass.
On 7th March, a special programme was dedicated to Rev. Fr. Clement Wong who was going to complete the tenure of office as the Supervisor.
An S.S.O.B.A publication, 'S.S.O.B.A. NEWS'. made its debut on 7th June. — Rev. Fr. Joseph Cheng succeeded Rev. Fr. Clement Wong as the Supervisor in mid-August.
1987
The Annual Thanksgiving Day was celebrated on 6th March. The day was followed by a Thanksgiving Night Variety Show. One thousand and seven hundred dollars from admission tickets were donated to a charitable organization for the homeless.
Our school came second in a quiz competition organized by Commercial Radio Hong Kong and the Housing Department
In June, forty Form 5 students participated in the Leadership Training Camp organized by Fr. Joseph Cheng, Mr. Leung Wai Man and Form-teachers.
Teachers and students in Salesian School contributed generously to the relief of the victims of a disastrous fire in Mohe (Heilong Jiang, China).
In mid-July, our staff and students visited the Vietnamese refugees in Fu Tei Centre, Tuen Mun.
1988
The grand opening ceremony of DB88 was held at Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Wanchai, on 31st January. It was followed by an evening variety entertainment. Our school participation was unprecedented. As many as two hundred of our students and teachers took part in this performance.
A Joint Athletic Meet for the Salesian Schools in Hong Kong and Macau was held on 8th February at the Government Stadium. Our school carried off the overall Champion and the 'A Grade' Champion.
The DB88 Joint School Teachers' Day was held on 29th February. This provided an opportunity for the exchange of teaching experience.
In May, Rev. Fr. T. Panakezham, Regional Councillor of the Salesian Society, came to the school on an official visit. He addressed the school in a morning assembly and he urged us to emulate the spirit of Don Bosco.
1989
A special celebration of the Salesian Society was held at Hong Kong Coliseum on 29th January. Rector Major, Very Rev. Fr. Egidio Vigaro addressed the opening ceremony through the video transmission.
Teachers and Students paid tribute through the press to those who sacrificed their lives in the 4th June incident.
In September, both Rev. Fr. Joseph Cheng and Rev. Fr. Joseph Ho completed their tenure of office. Rev. Fr. Jacob Yu and Rev. Fr. Joseph So succeeded as the Supervisor and the Principal respectively.
1990
The Annual Thanksgiving Day was held on 16 February. Members of the staff who had worked for more than 20 years were presented with a trophy to encourage their services in Salesian School.
Due to the various changes of educational policy (Joint University and Polytechnic Admission, innovations on H.K.C.E.E. and A Level syllabus) a School Curriculum Advisory committee was set up in May to discuss, evaluate and advise to the school authority.
One of our students Leung Kwok Sing, got five distinctions in the Advanced Level Examination.
In the same period, both Yeung Chi Hang and Ng Tai Kong gained 9 distinctions in H.K.C.E.E. Their excellent performances hit the headlines of the press.
The Secondary Section underwent a revolution by employing lady teachers.
The South China Morning Post carried an article on 24th September to praise the successful performance of our school in the public examinations. — On 15th October, the student union of Chinese University Hong Kong sent a representative to our school to stress the importance of environmental conservation and green power.
The orchestral instructors of Music Office called on our school on 22nd October.
Our alumnus Mr. Cheung Kai Cheung, Executive Secretary of the Open Learning Institute was invited as our honourable guest to address the assembly on the Speech Day of our school on 10th November.
1991
On 31st January, Rev. Fr. John Tsai Kuo-Chang who worked for more than sixteen years as Mathematics teacher in Salesian School retired.
Under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Peter Pong, the Prefect of Religious Education, we had a grand celebration of the Feast Day of Mary Help of Christians at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on 24th May.
On 18th September, Rev. Fr. John B. Zen was invited to officiate at the opening ceremony of 40th Anniversary of Salesian School and the extra-curricular activities exhibition.
On 9th October, our Annual Swimming Gala was held. Mr. Cheng On Yin, the chairman of S.S.O.B.A., was invited as our honourable guest to address the assembly and give away trophies to the winners.
A campaign of cleanliness and tidiness was started on 14th October.
On 16th November, our alumus, Professor Dominic Lam Man-Kit, Director of Hong Kong Institute of Biotechnology, was invited as our guest of honour to address the assembly and present certificates in the graduation ceremony. Also we were glad to invite Mr. Thomas P. K. Kwok, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd., to present prizes and scholarships.
Our alumnus, Mr. Thomas P. K. Kwok, donated 400 thousand dollars for the scholarships fund and extra-curricular activities fund.
On 9th December, Rev. Fr. John B. Kwan and Rev. Fr. Paul Fong were invited to share their experiences of faith with teachers and students on the Feast day of the Immaculate Conception.
On 23rd December, out alumnus Rev. Fr. Joseph Wong Hak-Pin was invited to address the school community at the Christmas celebration.
1992
The Open day Exhibition was held on 11th & 12th January. Mr. Y. T. Li. CBE, JP., the Director of Education, Rev. Fr. John B. Zen, the Provincial of Salesians of Don Bosco (China Province) and Mr. Thomas Kwok, the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd., were invited to officiate at the opening ceremony. The Annual Dinner Party was held on 12th January.
The Annual Athletic Meet was held on 21st January. Our alumnus Mr. Yu Hon Kee was invited to address and present prizes.
An 'Outstanding Youth Award' was organized by the District Office and Eastern District Board. Our student Mak Ka Hoi (F.5C) won the award and was invited with some District Board members to visit Singapore during the Lunar New Year Holidays and to share experience with other Award winners. Besides, Chow Man Chit (F.6M) and Lam Li Hung (F.6M) got a special prize in this Youth Award Competition.
Our School team came into the final of Inter-School Quiz competition organized by the Housing Department and Radio Television Hong Kong. Three team members: Ho Chee Hei, Wong Wai Leung and Chan Chi Kan were invited to visit Singapore with other finalists. In the end, our school was the champion.
Rev. Fr. Norbert Tse was invited to preside at a Holy Mass for the Feast of Don Bosco on 31st January.
Our Annual Thanksgiving Day was held on 21st. and 22nd February. We were glad to invite Mr. Lam Fat Shing and Mr. Tong Ken Min, representatives of the Parents Association, to address the assembly during the Evening Variety Show on honour of parents.
The glamour of HOMECOMING DAY for old boys on 25th April was successful in as much as participants showed involvement and contribution.
The school magazine would be published at the end of May.
The Feast Day of Mary Help of Christians would be held on 22nd May. His Eminence, Cardinal John B. Wu was invited to officiate the Holy Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Mr. K. C. Yip, the: President of S.S.O.B.A., was invited to address the closing ceremony of 40th Anniversary of Salesian School on 10th July.
Rev. Fr. Peter K. L. Ho was invited to address the opening ceremony of the new academic year on 1st September.
Mr. Martin Lee, the legislator ,was invited to deliver a speech in our school on 29th September. He highly appreciated our contribution and effort done in education
The 27th Annual Swimming Gala was held at Victoria Swimming Pool on 14th October. Very Rev. Fr. Antonio Martinelli, the General Councillor for" Salesian Family and Social Communication, was invited as our honourable guest to address the assembly and present prizes.
Some officers from the Hong Kong Society for the Aged came on 17th December to propagandize their activities on Taking Care of the Elderly.
1993
The Hong Kong Red Cross sent some officers to our school on 15th January to organize the blood donation. It was successful since many students participated enthusiastically in this school function.
The 39th Annual Athletic Meet was held at Wanchai Sports Ground on 9th February. Our alumnus, Mr. Paul W. H. Tsui was invited to address the assembly and present trophies to the winners.
An inter-class story-telling competition on Chinese History was held on 21st April. It aimed at encouraging students to learn and imitate the virtue of great and good men through history.
On 23rd April, an inter-class quiz competition on Chinese History was held in order to help students understand the aims of history.
On 17th May, a campaign of cleanliness was boosted. Attitudes on keeping our school clean and environmental conservation were encouraged.
On 10th August, Ho Shing Yan gained 10 distinctions in H.K.C.E.E.
The 28th Annual swimming Gala was held in Victoria Swimming Pool on 11th October. Rev. F Nobert Tse was invited to address the assembly. All prizes and trophies were sponsored by our alumnus, Mr. T. K. Wong.
Mr. Michael Leung, C.B.E., J.P., Secretary of Education and Manpower, was invited as our honorable guest to officiate at the Annual Speech Day on 19th November. It was also our honour that Mr. Thomas P. K. Kwok, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited, promised to present the certificates in the assembly and donate $500,000 for setting up the foundation of scholarships fund.

The 40th Annual Athletic Meet was held on 13th January and Our alumnus, Mr. Anthony P. H. Ip, the Contracts Manager of Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd., was invited for the prize presentation.
Our teaching staff and students were unanimous to participate in the blood donation on 17th January.
On 18th January, a three-day book exhibition was held in our school hall. An unprecedented success was beyond all praise.
On 17th March, the seminar on The Use of Preventive Strategy on Today's Education was organized for teachers and parents. Fr. Simon Lam C.W., the Principal of St. Louis School was invited to give a speech on this topic.
Eight students from our school obtained the Grantham Scholarship from the Education Department on 18th April.
Rev. Fr. T. Panakezham, Regional Councillor of Salesian Society was invited for the celebration of the Feast Day of Mary Help of Christians at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on 24th May.
Graduation Dinner was held at Omni Hong Kong Hotel on 10th June.
Education officials from China, especially from Zhejiang, Jiannsu, Anhui and Liaoning, visited out school on 30th June for academic purpose.
The 29th Annual Swimming Gala was held on 4th October. Our alumnus Mr. W Y. Yiu was invited to address the assembly and present prizes.
Dr. Simon Leung, Director & Principal of Ebenezer School & Home for the Blind, was invited as our guest of honour to address the assembly and present certificates in the Annual Speech Day on 5th November. Also we were glad to invite Mr. Peter K. C. Yip, the President of S.S.O.B.A., to present prizes and certificates.
1995
The 41st Annual Athletic Meet was held on 20th January. It was our honour to invite our alumnus Mr. T. W. Choi to address the assembly and present prized.
The seminar on The Importance of Religious Studies and Ethic Culture in Education was organized for teachers and parents on 13th March. Fr. Simon Lam C.W. was invited to deliver a speech on this topic.
The Graduation Dinner was held at Excelsior Hotel from our graduates on 1st June.
It was honourable to invite the following guests to address the Break Ground Ceremony of our School Expansion and Alteration Project on 10th August :

— The new academic year started on 4th September. Rev. Fr. Peter K. L. Ho was succeeded as Provincial of China Province of the Salesian Society of Don Bosco. Rev. Fr. Joseph C. C. So served as the school supervisor cum principal.
Two students because of their best results in HKCEE obtained the Grantham Scholarships from the Education Department on 4th October.
The 30th Annual Swimming Gala was held. Mr. Eric P. S. Kwok, Managing Director of Pofield Real Estate Co. Ltd., was invited as our guest of honour for the prizes presentation.
On 2nd November, some tenure teachers of St. Paul's College from the Philippines came to our school for the academic purpose.
Fund Raising activities for our School Expansion and Alteration Project were prepared to organize on 6th November. — The performance from the orchestral instructors of Music Office was organized for F.2 students on 7th November.
Mr. Louis Tong, Acting Principal Magistrate, was invited as our honourable guest to address the assembly and present certificates and prizes in the Annual Speech Day on 18th November.
Br. Aloysius C. K. Tam was invited to share his experiences of faith with teachers and students on the Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception on 7th December.
The 42nd Annual Athletic Meet was held at Wanchai Sports Ground on 9th December. Our alumnus Mr. Francis Leung, Managing Director of Peregine Capital Ltd., was invited to address the assembly and present prizes.
1996
One of the fund raising activities for our school expansion project, the Homecoming Day for old boys, was held on 7th January. This activity, the walkathon, was started at our school and ended at Lei Yu Mun Country Park. It was successful as every participant enjoyed his happiness in the day camp at Lei Yu Mun Country Park.
Rev. Fr. Joseph C. C. So was invited to preside at the Holy Mass for the Feast of Don Bosco on Jan 26.
The Annual Thanksgiving Day was held at Jan 26 & 27.
On Feb, 26 Very Rev. Fr. Peter K. L. Ho, Provincial of China Province of the Salesian Society of Don Bosco, was invited to preside the blessing ceremony of the school extension. It was also inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Joseph C. C. So, our school supervisor cum principal. Many teaching staff and students were attending in the ceremony.
The seminar on Lifelong Education and Career and Extra Curricular Activities was organized for teachers and parents on March 15, Fr. Simon Lam C. W., Principal of St. Louis School, was invited to give a talk on the related topic. Group discussion was held after the seminar. Suggestions from the groups were edited and collected in the teaching handbook.
It was honourable to invite the following guests to address our school open day exhibition for the school extension cum 45th anniversary of the school foundation on May 4: Mr. C. K. Tam, Chief Education officer (Hong Kong Region), Very Rev. Fr. Peter K. L. Ho, Provincial of China Province of the Salesian Society of Don Bosco, Mr. Thomas P. K. Kwok, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited.
The dinner party for celebrating the school expansion and alteration was held at Hopewell Restaurant on May 5.
Form 3 pupils won the Championship in the 14th Careers Quiz, organized by the Labour Department.
Form Six pupils, Chiu Kwok Kong and Ho Ka Shun were awarded the Grantham Scholarship for their outstanding performance in the H.K.C.E.E.
Out of hundreds of contestants, our school table tennis team was the 2nd runners-up and received a computer as a prize from the sponsor.
The Computer Society of our school joined the Joint School Exhibition of Electronics and Computer Association in August at the Science Museum. Out of 20 contestants, our school team came second overall. The team also got the award for showing the most creativity and the Best Hardware Design award.
In September, Rev. Louis Cheung was appointed as Prefect of Religious Education.
Alumni of our school, Messrs. S. L. Tai, W M. Lau and W S. Ngan demonstrated excellent achievement in academic pursuits and were openly acclaimed in letters of appreciation from their respective universities. — On 30th November, the return to their Alma Mater of more than 50 graduates of 1976, with their families, warmed the school. The dinner was held in the Ming Wah Restaurant and the representative S. W. Yu donated Rev. Joseph So forty thousand dollars as a grant for the school fees of needy pupils.
1997
In August, Form 7 pupil Chiu Kwok Kong outdid other competitors and won the Lee Shau Kee scholarship and was sent to Wadham College, Oxford University, U.K. He was the second student to go there just after a former schoolmate, Mr. H. B. Lee who went three years before. Mr. H. B. Lee got 1st Class Honours in the aforesaid University.
In summer, our School team was the 2nd runners-up in the Science Exhibition Contest in Hong Kong.
Concurrently, the Geography and Conservancy Society won the championship in the contest of the Joint School Environmental Exhibition. It defeated 18 school teams with an exhibit named "How to cultivate scrubs".
In September, the Salesian School Old Boys Association sponsored the installation of a LCD projector and screen in the school hall.
Two members of the football team of our school, C. S. Ho and L. H. Lo, were chosen as the representatives of the Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation. They had to undergo intensive training and participate in the 26th Asian Student Football Contest in September.
The Very Rev. Juan Vecchi, Rector Major, visited our school on 9th of October, and Rev. Chinnappa, a Salesian priest from India, during his visit, promoted cultural exchange between China and India.
In November, W. M. Lau from the Engineering Faculty in H.K.U. and K. C. Kwok from Political and Administration Department of C.U.H.K. received letters of appreciation from their respective universities.
In December, our school failed to be listed in the 100 EMI schools announced by the Education Department.
1998 — — — — — — 
In March, the Education Department and the Appeals Committee (Medium of Instructions Guidance) declined our appeal for EMI status.
The Basketball teams of our school, B grade and C grade, beat other school teams from: Wah Yan College, Queen's College, King's College, Chinese International School ... The teams acquired their highest level of honour for the first time by gaining the title of overall 1st runners-up.
In July, Mr. Go Kim Guam retired after more than 30 years of service. — In August, our school sent a team of Science students to join the 31st Joint School Science Exhibition. The theme of the exhibition was " Conflict, Advancement, Harmony". Our exhibit was "the Slanbus Pro"- the design of a model bus. After hours of laborious work, our team came first and was the overall champion. They also earned other titles, such as "Most Popular Project", "Best Proposal Award", "Outstanding Demonstration Award", and the "Best Demonstrator (Y. F. Cheng)".
Our school Grade B basketball team participated in the Basketball Marathon Tournament organized by Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation and was the 2nd runners-up out of 128 teams. Their skills at basketball were really to be admired.
In September, Rev. Joseph So followed medical advice and suspended his tenure of office. Rev. Peter Ng was appointed as the School Supervisor, Rev. Andrew Ng as the School Principal and Rev. Domingos Leong as the Prefect of Religious Education.
In summer, the computer team of our school participated again in the Joint School Computer Exhibition. The team gained the title of "the most popular stall." —
C. H. Wu, a Form 5 pupil, acquired the honour of the Chief Scout Award in scouting activities. The scouts in 17th HKG had bot received the award for more than 20 years.

1999
In May, Rev. Andrew Ng retired from office because of ill health, Rev. Joseph So resumed as the Principal.
The school football team regained the title of overall champions in the Inter-School Football Competition, Division Ⅱ (Hong Kong Island and Kowloon). The team was also promoted to Division I.
An ad hoc group was formed to build a straw bridge in a contest organized by the Department of Physics and Materials Science, City University. From among 500 contestants, our school team came second in the senior group as the members were able to build the second longest straw bridge to carry the weight of one can of soft drinks, as stipulated.
Owing to the outstanding performance of "the Slanbus Pro" in the exhibition, our school team was elected as the Hong Kong representatives to participate in the Joint Schools Science Exhibition of pan-pacific countries in Taiwan. The team brought honour to our school again by coming third in the competition.
In order to comply with the IT policy of the Education and Manpower Bureau, our school invested capital to build one language laboratory and one multi-media room. The local area network was also installed, including a system of video broadcasting and cyber-classrooms controllable by computers.
On 23rd of September, an alumnus who graduated in 1972, C. Y. Kwok, an IT teacher of a renowned catholic school in Melbourne, Australia, was invited by the Principal to share his experience on Information Technology with our teaching staff.
In September, the Education Department subsidized 1 million and 200 thousand dollars to upgrade our computer facilities in the library, the staff room, and to provide a computer network and equipment. However, as the money could not cover all expenses, Mr. P. K. Kwok, an alumnus, generously supported the scheme. In consequence, by the end of the year, our school had a fully furnished language laboratory and a multi-media room, each equipped with more than 40 computers, a visualizer, LCD projector and a smartboard.
In October, letters of appreciation were sent to acclaim the good academic performances of our old boys in their respective universities. They were, namely, M. K. Lee, W. C. Ng, W. H. Leung, C. B. Cheng, S. Martin, C. N. Ng, S. K. Tang and W. K. Wong.
2000
In January, K. C. Cheung, C. W. Chin, C. Y. Fong, M. K. Lee, S. B. Lui, L. T. Wong, K. W. Tang and H. K. Tsuei were honoured by their respective universities in letters of appreciation to our school.
Our school choir won the championship of Plain Song, at the School Music Festival in 1999. The choir won this title again this year.
In April, the language laboratory and the multi-media room were named after their benefactors. They were Mr. T S. Kwok (language laboratory) and Mr. P. K. Kwok (multi-media room). The network was recently upgraded to broadband. Teachers can utilize the facilities in the staff computer room.
The staff training scheme was implemented according to the IT policy. — Y. P. Kao of Form 6B was elected as the best debater in the Joint School English Debating Competition.
Mr. P. K. Kwok, graduate in 1969, was invited to officiate at the opening ceremony of the two IT rooms on 24th May 2000. He shared his social experience with the Form six pupils after the ceremony.
The Salesian Society extended its mission of faith to Mainland China. Some Salesians had to go north. There was also the problem of retirement due to age. There was a short supply of manpower in the society.
In September, the Provincial Rector appointed Mr. Peter Y. T. Lam, the vice-principal, as the Acting Principal. Rev. Joseph. So took up the duty of Supervisor of the Primary and Secondary schools. Rev. Peter Ng was transferred to St. Louis School.
Dr. M. C. Ng, a graduate in 1978, now the assistant professor in Institute of Textiles and Clothing, Polytechnic University, was conferred with a doctorate degree by the Royal Academy of Arts, London. His dissertation may have been the first research in fashion design since the establishment of the Royal Academy.
Our clerk, Mr. C. W. Li retired after 37 years of service.
At the 52nd Hong Kong Speech Festival in November, six of our students gained high placements (Three were second runners-up, Two were first runners-up and one, Wesley Chan in Form 2 was the winner of his section).
2001
17th and 18th of February would be the School Open Day for the 50th Anniversary. The contents would be web pages centred on Information Technology and the history of Salesian English School.
Form 3 and Form 4 pupils would make a classroom display. There would also be puppet shows in English, first aid demonstrations and music concerts.
At night, there would be a reunion dinner party at the King of Kings restaurant in the Central District.
2002
The alumnus of Tang King Po School, Dom Jose Song Sui Wan who succeeded as S.D.B. Bispo de Sao Gabriel Da Cachoeira, visited our school at 19th December.

The "School Improvement Project" started at summer vacation and the date of completion would be planned in June 2006. The new extension would be situated just next to the school playground and it provided 3 new staffrooms, a common room and computer rooms for teachers and students.
Teams of Religious Studies, Moral and Civic Education would be combined as a new unit called "Committee of Religious, Ethics and Civic Education". Rev. Fr. Antonio Leung, S.D.B. was invited as the new convenor of the new committee.
In 36th Joint-School Science Exhibition, our school came first in "Best Proposal Award", "Best Design and Decoration Award", "Best Demonstrator Award", "Best Project Holder Award" and second in "Energy Efficiency and Conservation Award". Our exhibit convincingly won the overall champion that year. Next year, as delegates of Hong Kong, our school students attended the international science exhibition in Taiwan and obtained the third honour in Physics.

Our school television station was set up this year. It provided places and opportunities for students to produce different TV programmes to assist teaching and school promotion.
Our alumnus, Yum Tsz Yin (98-99), won the most reputable championship in the international conference. His thesis concerning mixing circuits and wireless communication system won the best honour and he was the first Asian student to get this prestige.
Continuing our best efforts in Joint-School Science Exhibition, our students got a tremendous performance and good result in the exhibition. We obtained the first in "Best Proposal Award", "Best Project Holder Award", and the second in "Energy Efficiency and Conservation Award". Our school got the overall champion and represented Hong Kong to attend the international science exhibition. We obtained the same result as in year 2004.
2005
The External School Review was launched from Education Bureau in October. From four different domains: Management and Organisation, Learning and Teaching, Student Support and School Ethos, and Student Performance, our effort and work were highly recommended.
2006
Our alumnus,Dr. Wong Chung Kwong was invited to address the ceremony of our Speech Day.
A grand celebration of 55th Anniversary of our school was held on 14th and 15th January. It included the school open day and banquet.
Our alumnus, Choi Kar Lam (01-02), got the best honour in his academic performance from the University of Science and Technology.
Our school had a great participation and contribution in different events of DB100.
2007
Our school joined the English Enhancement Scheme. With the financial support from the Education Bureau, we could improve both teaching and learning through developing a holistic school-based plan, building up sustainability and a collaborative teaching culture, and organising different English programmes to individual differences through NETS.
The new extension of our school was completed in January. Our school supervisor, Rev. Fr. Matthew Chan Hung Kee, S.D.B. was invited to preside the blessing ceremony.
n March, our school joined the "Enhancing English Language Teaching Project". The objective was to help teachers prepare NSS curriculum.
The Focus Inspection of the key learning area in Personal, Social and Humanities Education was held in October. The feedback of our school performance was good.
2008 —
To activate the progress of Liberal Studies in NSS curriculum, our school joined the 'teaching and resource network' of the Liberal Studies in Eastern District. In September, our school was invited by the Education Bureau to be the main resource centre in Eastern District. Teachers were welcome to share their teaching experience and resources.

The Focus Inspection of the key learning area in Mathematics Education was held in January. The general performance was satisfactory.

Father Alexander Ma passed away peacefully on December 28. The memorial service was held at the school entrance for our school students and teachers.
Our student Mak King Ho obtained brilliant results not only in Singles and Doubles for secondary students in All Hong Kong Schools Jing Ying Tournament, but also in Heng Seng All Schools Championships. In the above championship, he got the first-runner up among 1220 competitors. He also received a scholarship of $1000.
2010
In August, Mr. Lam Yuk Tai retired from office and Miss Josephine To was appointed as the first female Principal in Salesian English School.
In September, the first executive committee was held for the 60th Anniversary Celebration.
In 2010 July, our graduated student Wong Chi Fung (5C) was awarded the Good Citizen Award by Hong Kong Police Force for reporting and witnessing a case of disorder in public places. He worked with another witness and arrest the suspect.
In August, Mr. Lam Yuk Tai retired from office and Miss Josephine To was appointed as the first female Principal of Salesian English School.
In September, the first executive committee meeting for the 60th Anniversary Celebration was held.
Our alumni have fundraised and planned to organize Salesians English School Development Fund for the school to apply in order to support the school educational development.
To praise students who excel the best in area of sports, academic and personal qualities, alumni graduated in 1979 have run Prominent Athlete Award Scheme, in order to enhance our students’ interest and engagement in joining sport activities.
43rd Joint School Science Exhibition was held from 27th to 31st of August in Central Library underground exhibition hall. Themed with “Science has no boundaries, safety flavors itself”, our school participated in the competition with BRASIER and awarded 2nd runner-up of the Best Booth Design Award, 2nd runner-up of the Most Popular Participating School Award and 2nd runner-up of the Overall Award.

2011
Our school has founded Salesians English School Development Fund, a registered non-profitable charity organization.
In 28th March, the relic of St. Don Bosco arrived at school. Religious service was hosted by Fr. Simon Lam. Primary and secondary students and teachers celebrated the arrival through praying, singing and sharing.
Salesian English School Foundation was officially established on 24th May, 2011. This organization is a non-profitable charity funded by our alumni. Under the big support of our old boys, eight million dollars has been raised. The aim of this organization is to sponsor the medical fees of Reverend fathers, scholarship, improve the learning environment, maximize the effectiveness of the school’s learning and teaching environment and support the school evangelization activities and other school projects.
On Jul 7, a group of teachers from Guandong, who were attending an in-service training course in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, came to our school to have an academic exchange.
In August, Salesian English School 60th Anniversary Commemorative Issue was published.
In September, our school has voluntarily joined the Voluntary Optimisation of Class Structure Scheme in order to facilitate sustainable development of secondary schools under the NSS academic structure.
The extension of Salesian House of Studies will begin. The school’s playground was renovated. With the lower stone wall destructed, the extension required a year and a half to finish. Salesian House of Studies will assist to replan the playground upon completion.

2012
In January, Hong Kong Education Bureau’s Quality Assurance and School-based Support Division visited our school on 11th, 13th, 16th and 17 January to conduct a focus inspection on the use of English as the medium of instruction. The purpose of this inspection was to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of using fine-tuned medium of instruction in teaching. Education Bureau was generally satisfied with students’ performance using the fine-tuned the medium of instruction.
The first English Speaking Day was held on 28th February 2012. The objectives were to enhance students' confidence in speaking English, to provide more opportunities for them to practise oral English beyond the classroom and to enhance their interview skills.
Students’ first attempt to DSE received a satisfactory result. Over 90% achieved level 2 or above in all core subjects (Chinese, English, Mathematics and Liberal Studies). The number of students getting level 2 was on average higher than the territory-wide standard in Hong Kong.
An establishment ceremony for the St John Ambulance was held on the 2nd September. In the meantime, the library club and the reading promotion team made their debut magazine《喜閱》.
In September, Hong Kong Education Bureau’s Quality Assurance and School-based Support Division sent the External School Review Team to our school on 15th, 17th- 19th and 24th September to assess our school’s performance on four major areas (Management and Organization, Teaching and Learning, School’s ethos and Students Support, Students’ Performance). This inspection gave EDB an opportunity to have a better understanding of our school’s approach in conducting ongoing school self-evaluation (SSE) which was used as guidelines for the school to amend or improve the school’s development plan.
Last October, A 5-day inspection was carried out in our school by the Education Bureau. Its aim is to get familiar with our student’s learning progress. Also, references on teaching efficiency were taken from the inspectors.
Since 2012, many changes have been made in our school. Father Yip Tai Ho has become the new Prefect of Religious Education while Father Leung Wai Choi has studied abroad. In addition, Principal Ms. To staged several Breakfast sessions in bid to provide parents a closer view with our school’s latest development.
Mr Kwok Chi Tak, our graduate of 1970 was invited as an honorable guest to address the assembly and award certificates to the graduates of 2011- 2012. In addition, Salesian English School Foundation funded eighty thousand dollars to students of the best academic performance, the best conduct and the best school service.
Chan Ming Tung, a Form 3 student of our school, participated in the National Teenager Snooker Final Competition in Wuxi and won the championship with an outstanding achievement of winning 3:1 matches.
2013
In January, to echo the Year of Faith and the bicentennial of Don Bosco's birth, Religious Education Committee organized a 2-day pilgrimage to Macau. Participants were able to deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith and the Don Bosco’s charisma.
Many thanks to our NET - Ms. Jacqueline Heusdens and the English Ambassadors, “Everyday English” and “One Minute English” were first introduced in January. Students can thus learn English in a different way.
A camp for all Uniform Groups in our school was first organized during the Easter holiday by both The 17th Hong Kong Group Scout Troop and the Hong Kong Red Cross Unit 70.
“The Internship Program” was held on the 11th May by the Salesian Old Boy’s Association. Prominent Alumnus from the 1969s and 1970s have taken the leading role in guiding students the road to internship so as to broaden their horizon. 1st Salesian Cup (A football and basketball invitational tournament) is held to serve as a platform to strengthen the relationship between the participating schools. Every player gave their best on the lively day to fight for the trophy and develop friendship.
In celebration of the bicentennial of Don Bosco’s birth, Salesian Society, Daughters of Mary Help of Christians and the Sisters Announcers of the Lord organized a conference on the Preventive Education to share its concept and practice.
Mr Yu Yee Hang, our graduate of 1970 was invited as an honorable guest on the Speech Day to address the assembly and award certificates to the graduates of 2012- 2013. $60,000 was funded by the Salesian English School Foundation to award students who had excellent academic performance, good conduct and good service records.
2014
F4C Chan Ming Tung took part in IBSF World U21 Championship from 8th May to 15th May in Emirates. With the leading snooker player in China, Ding Junhui and Marco Fu Ka Chun, it is a precious chance for him to be part of the competition at the young age of fifteen.
Alumni from the Class of 1980 have kindly donated 10 brand new ping-pong tables to us. The School Supervisor, Father Lam, together with the Alumni representatives, were cordially invited to the grand ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“2014 Gala Dinner” was successfully held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on the 4th October, 2016. Mr. Aaron Kwok, our alumnus, was also given the “Outstanding alumni Award” that night. Altogether 60 tables of people joined the event and the proceeds amounted to 7 million dollars.
“English channel” and “Discovery Channel” were debuted on the school webpage since October. With the above alternatives offered, students may learn both English and Science effectively.
Mr. Chan Kwan, Our alumni, donated three Auto Spraying Systems to us. Students are thus provided a comfortable learning environment. The construction of these systems was accomplished on the 24th October.

16 alumni from different work fields organized a talk on their careers on 2nd January for F.4 and F.6 students. It has strengthened students’ understanding of different jobs and life planning.
To celebrate the 200th Birth of St. Don Bosco, our school united 5 other Salesians school to hold “DB200 Sports Day” on 29th January in Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground. the Regional Councillor of Salesian East Asia-Oceania, Fr. Klement and Provincial Rev. Fr. Lanfranco Fedrigotti officiated the event.
From 12th to 13th Feb, the Regional Councillor of Salesian East Asia-Oceania, Rev. Fr. Klement paid a visit to our school.
All teaching staff took part in Salesian Joint-school Staff Development Day. Fr. Andrew Fung on this occasion shared how to write the school development plan.
Election of Teacher Manager for 2nd IMC was held on 12th June. Mr Wan Pak Keung was elected Teacher Manager, Mr Tse Sui Fai being Alternate Teacher Manager. Parent Manager Election was held on the next day. Mr Ming Chun Sum was elected Parent Manager while Ms Yeung Lai Fong became Alternate Parent Manager.
We have successfully become a partner school of ‘A Fusion of Robotics and Chinese Cultural Arts’, a scheme co-organized by the School of Engineering in CUHK and Hong Kong Technology Education Association .
To encourage students know better about Hong Kong from various reading activities, the Reading Promotion Team has introduced a new event ‘Salesian Reading Festival’ with the theme ‘Reading Hong Kong’ from April to July . Students are exposed to local literatures, history and social issues. The activities are as follows:Literary Walk in North Point, Book Fair, Writer’s Talk by Mr. Kursk, Lunch Reading Club and Movie Appreciation.
In August, “Anti-allergic Rhinitis Mask” was prepared to participate in 48th Joint School Science Exhibition. We excelled the best to be awarded The Most Popular Booth out of 21 schools.
The School Library has received $100 million and $50 million in sponsorship from The Salesian School Foundation and Mr Chan Wing Kit, an old boy of 1980. The renovation project started in the summer of 2015.
In September, Rev. Fr. Matthew Chan was appointed to be the school chancellor and chairperson of IMC of 2015-2016.
In October, Quality Assurance and School-based Support Division implemented focus inspection on Science Education Key Learning Area (Integrated Science, Physics and Chemistry). Inspectors offered comments on how to improve our work and found the school performance regarding the KLA was satisfactory.
The Opening Ceremony of Religious Activities Room, Gym Room and Self-study Room was on 6 Nov. Rev. Fr. Matthew officiated the ceremony, lots of parents, teachers and students took part in it.

2016
To promote development of information technology, we took part in the Innovation and Technology Ambassador Scheme together with Salesian School (Primary Section). The scheme was organized by the City University of Hong Kong, and college students were sent to our campus to demonstrate programming and other latest technology. Our students could learn and pass on knowledge learnt.
On 17th January, old boys of Year 1978 presented the school with 10 brand new table soccer tables which are of international standard. The first Salesian Table Soccer Competition was held on that day.
30th and 31st January were the 65th Anniversary Open Days of Salesian English School. On the first day, we had the Open Day Opening Ceremony. Original English Musical “Without Dream” debuted and was well-received. On the second day, we were glad to have the Representative of Salesians English School Foundation and other hounourable guests in the Consecration of the new School Library held by Rev. Fr. Matthew.
Mr. Lam Wai Ching received the ‘School Like Teacher Award’ in the ‘School Like’ Scheme organized by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. Mr. Lam has devoted himself to shooting creative and educational films with the Multimedia Team.
This year our Form 2 boys joined 'Speak Out - Act Up!' Improvised Drama Competition 2015 – 2016" organized by the EDB. Under the supervision of our two NETs, Mr. Tither and Ms. Tong, our students won the championship among many schools in this entry.
On 24th May, Phase One of the Salesians Heritage Corner was completed. We were honored to have Chancellor Fr. Matthew Chan to consecrate the project.
